Embracing positive thoughts may present a number of benefits, but so does embracing the negative once in awhile. In fact, a study conducted back in 2016 found that when someone expresses negative emotions, their psychological health improves. This is partially due to how avoiding negative emotions can often result in feeling worse. Many people are afraid of embracing any negative emotions because of what Barbara Held calls, “the tyranny of a positive attitude”. Held claims that our society has very little tolerance when it comes to things that aren’t all positive.
- Our culture tends to have little tolerance for people who are down and gloomy as they want people to be happy and upbeat.
- Through positives and negatives, life is filled with experiences that greatly affect our emotions. Sometimes bad is needed to experience good.
- Instead of feeling happy, when we suppress our negative thoughts and don’t express them we tend to feel numb.
“A 2016 study found that expressing negative emotions is adaptive and is associated with improved psychological health and adjustment. Conversely, avoiding negative feelings can make you feel even worse.”
