The Tyranny of the Positive Attitude

We live in a time that promotes all lollipops and rainbows and made to feel that anything beyond this is null and void. Although it is great to be positive, not having or showing any negative emotion can be mentally devastating. Having negative emotions actually helps the human mind adapt and/or accept a situation that is not positive and helps us work through these problems. Without given a chance to adapt we become paralyzed and numb, unable to display any emotion in an effort to avoid being negative. So negative is actually a positive because we were created to deal with an adapt to all situations, positive and negative.

Key Takeaways:

  • Expressing negative feelings openly can be psychologically healthy, while suppressing them can be harmful.
  • There is often a cultural expectation that people should act positive and not complain, even when genuinely bad things are happening.
  • Many people try to keep busy in order to avoid their own feelings.
